Alyssa Chetrick
Violinist and composer Alyssa Chetrick traverses the musical scenes in New York and Tokyo. Merging a dual jazz and classical background, she can be found performing in venues including Blue Note Place, Smalls Jazz Club, Lincoln Center, The Tokyo Metropolitan Theater, Schwarzman Center, 54 Below, and Nublu. Classically trained from a young age, Chetrick made her debut in Japan at 19 as an ensemble cast member in "Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812." This pivotal experience, where she encountered jazz musicians backstage, ignited her passion for jazz and improvisation. Chetrick went on to complete her BA/BFA in Jazz and Global Studies from The New School. She is currently pursuing an MPH at Yale University, holding a chair in the Yale Jazz Ensemble directed by Wayne Escoffery.
Chetrick's compositions have been commissioned by the Inaugural New Haven Composers Spotlight and films for Sundance. Her newest EP "What Blooms in the Dark," contemplates the environmental consequences of 'business as usual' and has been featured on J-Wave Radio and WFUV. Critics have praised her ability to evoke both dynamism and solace. As noted by the New Haven Independent, "If some of the previous passages had offered a sense of calm, Chetrick was now going for chaos, spurring the ensemble around her to join her. Her phrasing pushed the musicians around her to dig deeper into the music she’d written.”
